Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has joined thousands of protesters at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day with the #FearlessOctober1 demonstration.

Sowore, a prominent figure in the protest movement, arrived at the site shortly after 8:50 a.m., rallying demonstrators against what they perceive as government failures.

The protest, heavily monitored by law enforcement agencies, including the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, underscores the growing discontent among citizens regarding Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.

Protesters expressed their grievances over rising hunger, inflation, and security challenges, all of which have been exacerbated by perceived government inefficiencies.

Organised by civil society groups such as the Take It Back Movement and the Coalition for Revolution, this demonstration follows the #EndBadGovernance protests held in August, highlighting a continued call for accountability and reform.

“The government must address the critical issues facing our people,” Sowore stated, echoing the sentiments of many demonstrators who demand immediate action on electoral reforms and human capital development.

With security personnel on high alert, the gathering remains peaceful as participants voice their demands for a better future.
